Regions of Valenwood

Post by Violet »

Arenth-Arla
Spoiler
The rolling hills and dense forests of the Arenth-Arla region is often the first glimpse of Valenwood to many travelers. The region's name roughly translates to "Arenth's Splendor", and is home to one of the greatest Bosmeri cities in terms of wealth and history - Arenthia, which is perched up on a cliff near the Forobruch River (originally the "Forochbruch", literally translated as "The Restless River". The change to "Forobruch" was made by the Thorimil Queen Lenkithia in approx. 1E 2721 in an attempt to make the Imperials feel more welcome now that Valenwood was made a member of the 2nd empire. This attempt is said to have insulted the local diplomat that had taken charge of the Arenthian trade between it and the rest of the empire. Some historians believe this was intentional, due to Queen Lenkithia's well documented acts of pettiness). The region itself is marked with several glades, thick evergreens towering over the flora that resides on the other side of the Strid River, and is littered with ruins and bandits. The swampy wetlands and mangroves of the river's edge fades as the region's height raises towards the south and southwest, whereas along the the southeast - as the Strid River splits off into the Xylo - the wet boglands transform into jagged jungles and valleys as the Dragon's Teeth opens up around you. The closer you come south towards the Dragon's Teeth mountain's exterior, the rougher the terrain becomes, the risk of flooding in the north and east becomes the risk of rockslides in the south and southwest, as the Dragon's Teeth grows ever more intimidating.
Xarxen Mora
Spoiler
The dense jungles of Xarxen Mora make Arenth-Arla's terrain look positively pleasant by comparison. Thick vines wrap around the winding branches like a spider's web. The flora here is known to produce an array of aromas, foul and relaxing alike. The ground is considerably muddy and overgrown, outside of the poorly kept 2nd empire road from Arenthia to Virimoor that cuts through Vulkwasten. This is the cause for the many branch trails in the region. These branch trails, of which include the "road" to the Imgan State of Gai'hoortak, demand those who wish to access them to climb tree branches and traverse the foliage above, with little in the way of railings or directions. The winding Xarxen Mora is well known for its mysterious nature. It's said that as many visitors get lost in this jungle per decade as there are drops of Skooma in the Niben, of course, this is mere exaggeration, though it is true that disappearances are particularly common within the region. As such, sticking to the main road and the footpaths that connect to it is highly advisable. This region is notable for having trees with some of the lowest heights in Valenwood. This isn't to say that they aren't still bigger than those outside of Valenwood, only that they are comparatively shorter. It's said that this region is one of the most popular with the Fey, though none of the locals are willing to show researchers where these mysterious creatures congregate, stories of their hollows ring throughout the region and its people.

Dragon's Teeth
Spoiler
The Valenwood portion of the Dragon's Teeth, the series of seemingly unconnected mountain peaks stretching from northern Hammerfell down to northeast-central Valenwood, is among the most peculiar of the Teeth. The Dragon's Teeth region of Valenwood sits at the highest point in Valenwood, and is shaped like two jaw connecting at its peak to the west, and falling down along with the Xylo River towards the Elsweyr border. The valley in which the Xylo River is located (commonly called the "Xylo River Basin" by non-natives) is a lush valley where the town of Kathravorne, of which the autumn site of Falinesti is located (though only partly controlled by Falinesti Kingdom, the reasoning for this joint ownership between Eldenroot and Falinesti being a result of King Anaxemus Camoran during the height of the Dominion), in contrast the village of Moonmont sits near the Dragon's Teeth peak, enjoying a windy, cold environment where the only foliage around is the rainforests of Silvenar Grove, poking their green heads up to the mountain. This mountain is made up of mostly marble, whereas far beneath the Dragon's Teeth, moderate deposits of glass were found. The Dragon's Teeth is where the Kingdom of Silvenar gets most of its inorganic building materials from. Unfortunately, this has lead to the Dragon's Teeth being entirely depleted of glass deposits, due to a mix of the Silvenar Palace and Dominion miners looking for additional materials to outfit their soldiers with Altmeri Glass. Rumors of as of yet untouched pockets of glass remaining, but those rumors have yet to be substantiated.
Silvenar Grove
Spoiler
The everflowing waterfalls and serene canopy of a thousand colors is certainly a popular stop among Valenwood tourists, as is the city of Silvenar itself. The Silvenar Grove is a region surrounded on all sides by various biomes, and as such, retains portions of those biomes within the edges of its terrain. Flora of all shape, size, and color envelop the scenery as if it were a painting. It is as much a beautiful place as it a holy place. The rivers and waterfalls are a popular area for Riana worship, as is the River Ooze a popular area for Y'ffre worship. As it's said that the place where the Eppav and Dellecir River tributaries flow into the River Ooze is where The Silvenar made the Green Pact with the Bosmeri god Y'ffre.
Elden Grove
Spoiler
The glades and rolling hills dot this massive forest region, as do the Graht sink holes, of which includes the sacred shrine to the first settlement of Falinesti - the First Tree of Valenwood. This region is often mistaken as the most peaceful of Valenwood regions, though the Centaur tribes and bored faeries are sure to correct that misconception. The Elden Grove is considered the most diverse of the regions, it contains a healthy mixture of rocky deciduous highlands overlooking pockets of lush overgrowth, rare patches of the ooze pits that are more often than not associated with the Lynpar Floodlands, and brackish lakes that were caused by the Graht sinkholes opening up the many underground rivers of the province.
Lynpar Floodlands
Spoiler
Lynpar Floodlands is an ever-humid region that acts as the drain to Arata Ceyglynn and Quinonda. The sea level region gets bowled from all sides, causing most of the region to be a perpetual swamp. Among the various swamps and bogs are the Ooze Swamps, the swamps that Bosmer claim bare evidence of the Ooze. It is said that falling into these swamps weakens your form, and thus they are avoided by the local Bosmer. The Satyr, on the other hand, can be seen to dive into these places annually. The region is mostly flat, with the only raises in elevation being south towards the Arata Ceyglynn and east towards Elsweyr. There are man-made blockages, such as the one that allows the Lynpar March to exist, but these are few and far between. Other than the Imperial's March, the Floodlands has one other major place of interest, the charred remains of the fallen Graht Oak Morineth, which now acts as a home to a mighty Orcish Clan.
Quinonda
Spoiler
Quinonda, Aldmeris for "Dividing Cliffs", is a giant cliff that divides southern Valenwood roughly down the middle. Some say that the cliff faces to the west and east. One of the least green areas of the province (of course, this is Valenwood, so "less plants" still means more plant life than the other provinces).
Arata Ceyglynn
Spoiler
Arata Ceyglynn is a partly florescent hilly rainforest in which all colors of the rainbow can be seen in the canopy. A wet and humid region, the rainwater from the hills travels down south and north to the Fyresent Coast and Lynpar Floodlands, respectively. As such, Arata Ceyglynn is full of various streams and small rivers throughout.
Fyresent Coast
Spoiler
The south-eastern most coastline of Valenwood, This pocket of the province considered the most pleasant of Valenwood's coastlines. Its tropical beaches are similar to that you might find in Elsweyr to the east.
Haset Hyarnai
Spoiler
"It was said that this is where the first Aldmeris tribes to have left the Summurset Isles and came into the marshy shores of the Haset-Hyarnai or the "Bone Marsh". A swampy coast of thick saltwater bogs, Nereith Reeds, and blood-red weeds resembling veins. The dark purple and bright green foliage envelopes pale, thin, skeletal evergreens of the Haset-Hyarnai."
Cerulean Coast
Spoiler
While not nearly as eerie and enigmatic as the Haset-Hyarnai to the south, the western coast of Valenwood is no less marshy. Though considerably more majestic, the Cerulean Coast is almost entirely swamp and marshland.
Riaskyl Morth
Spoiler
Riaskyl Morth is a cliffy and jagged mid-step between the heights of the Dragon's Teeth and the oozing wastes, tarpits, and brackish swamps of Lynpar Floodlands. It acts as Dragon's Teeth's steam vent, letting out toxic gases from the mountain's volcanic depths. The dangerous terrain, hazardous chemicals, and web-dens of aranchoid horrors leave little reason for travelers to visit the region, or for residents to settle therein, but the flora has adapted quite nicely to the harsh conditions. This region holds the now famous decaying fortress known as Selene's Web.
